Which Way Home?
Mystics have many ways to rise above normal awareness.
Find out which great Ascents work best for you.
Rise above worry. Think with power. And, live an inspired life!
Greetings and Love!
May your mind be worthy of your great soul!
Are you in good spirits and ready to greet the new Mystery?
You’re nicely prepared if you’ve searched your subjective mind and know it well. You’ve made great strides toward a finer existence.
Are you ready for the rigors of the road? Let’s proceed.
Now that you know the habitual flow of your thought and feeling, how do you change it and thus change your life?
In a nutshell: first you learn to ascend — rise above — the subjective level of your mind. Then, when you can ascend at will, you make contact with what mystics call your higher mind. And then your higher mind reveals powerful insights which are true and strong enough to redirect the subjective mind.
So, transformation of the subjective mind is a two-fold process involving two abilities:
Simply By Ignorance
I believe that much of the maladjustment in our societies is caused, not by malevolence and corruption, but simply by ignorance.
—Gilbert Highet, THE ART OF TEACHING (1950)
And you can’t gain regular contact with the higher mind unless you experience and develop the Mystery of Ascent.
Through ascent you can rise above old, intense, subjective momentums and subsequently gain an insight which is powerful enough to redirect the old momentum in a positive manner.
In the Technique Element we’ll focus on the eight main mystical ascents. Have fun with them. Try them all and then choose the one or two which show the most promise.
In the Basis element which follows, we’ll ponder why, how and when the mind ascends.
Why does the mind ascend? And under what conditions does the mind ascend?
We mystics find that the mind ascends to higher levels of awareness and into Spirit itself because it is simply and naturally “going home for a visit.”
Our minds are localized, individualized parts of a universal consciousness. When the mind ascends it releases its worldly preoccupations and effortlessly rises into sublime realms.
The reason most people are not familiar with the Infinite Spirit or the mystical planes of awareness is self-evident. Just examine the contents of your mind. Reflect for a few minutes and note the thoughts, feelings, images, sounds, memories and fantasies buzzing around within your mind.
Most people don’t experience mental ascents because their minds are overloaded and much too busy. First, each of the senses fill the mind with their continual streams of sensations. Then, the mind tries to interpret, evaluate, and respond successfully to the important sensations.
And since we also want to shape and influence the world, our mind is full of countless desires, hopes and yearnings. We need and want so many satisfactions and changes in our experience of life.
Further, the world often perturbs or scares us. Our minds must house our arrays of anger and fear. Add to these the numerous memories which also pour into the content of our minds. Thus, our minds seem filled to capacity.
Of course, you know about all this because you can observe the phenomenon of your mind’s activities directly, any time you like.
So, why doesn’t the mind ascend very often? You guessed it. It’s too busy, too inundated and overworked.
But, at those glorious times when the mind does ascend, why does it do so? It ascends because it is not bound to its normal, habitual activities. It is temporarily free to go home to states of peace and higher consciousness.
Under what conditions does the mind ascend? It ascends when you temporarily cease flooding it (with sensations, desires, fears, memories and fantasies) and allow it an opportunity to elevate. (Does this mean that making your mind blank will enable you to ascend? No, unfortunately. Even if you can make your mind a blank, you are exercising mental will power to maintain blankness. Since the will portion of your mind is actively engaged, you can’t ascend.)
Your mind naturally ascends when given half a chance. In ascension it receives insight, bliss, wisdom and renewal. Your mind returns from an ascent like the rest of you returns from a perfect vacation — very rested and refreshed!
Here, then, are eight of the finest ascents you can experience. In practicing them you are giving your mind consent — and encouragement — to return to its source for a heavenly reunion.
Try Several Methods of Ascent
Mystical ways of ascension are numerous. Different momentums of thought often require different forms of ascension. Now you can try several ascents and select the ones which are most effective for you. By the way, it’s normal to try many times before you get the subtle skill of ascending. Try, try again. You already have a higher mind. It’s basic equipment. You can do this. You can ascend.
Bear in mind, you will know you have successfully raised your level of consciousness when an old subjective momentum is truly released from your awareness and is not troubling or distracting you.
Mystical Ascents
Here are a number of ways to experience an ascent and temporarily enjoy moments of freedom from habitual flows of thought and feeling.
1 — Ecstasy and Transcendence — A magnificent way to redirect subjective habits of thought. I mention ecstasy and transcendence here for those who already enjoy them. They are among the most effective ascents. They come into your life as you develop mystically.
For now you can bring to mind a past ecstasy or moment of joy. See if you can feel that emotion again. If you can, let it grow and expand. You might ascend and enjoy an early taste of mystic ecstasy.
2 — Prayer — When prayer becomes engrossed in Spirit, one ascends beyond the subjective mind. Prayer and fasting for half a day (or even up to three days) is especially helpful with stubborn mental momentums. (But check with your doctor to be sure you’re healthy enough to fast. People with blood sugar problems may not be able to fast without harming their health.)
Why not pray about your subjective mind directly and ask for an ascent?
You might pray like this, if you like:
Beloved One
I cherish and adore You. Please lift me up into Your sweet company. Free me from all thoughts which are not of You, Truth, Beauty, or Goodness.
Amen.
3 — Heart Expansion — A fine ascent to a higher and more powerful level of awareness. Feel love radiating out from the center of your spine which is located directly back of your heart. Direct the feeling of love (or peace) and an image of white (or sky blue) light to radiate out and fill your whole chest area with love and light. Then direct the love and light to radiate out from you in all directions about three meters (or yards). Maintain this expansion until the Insight and Redirection occur. Then slowly gather the expansion back into the chest, and then back into the spinal area back of the heart.
4 — Mood of Love — Another widely-revered ascent is based on spiritual relationships. You feel so deeply related to the Divine that love fills you and you enter a blissful mood of love with the Lord of your heart.
You may wish to visualize that the Infinite has taken human form and stands before you as one of the great spiritual beings — Jesus, Mary, Buddha, or Krishna, for example. Direct your heart’s love to Him or Her. You may well become so filled with love that you ascend your subjective mind into Spirit.
5 — Absorption — You become so engrossed in the Deity or an attribute of the Deity (such as Love, Goodness, Lordship, Compassion, for example) that you ascend.
In practicing this ascension, you could direct your thoughts to the subject of Love, or Goodness, perhaps. Strive to think only of love or goodness, uninterruptedly. When your mind becomes one-pointed, you will ascend.
6 — Surrender — Giving yourself completely to the Lord of your heart. If you mean it, you might humbly say:
Beloved, I give my mind, heart, life and whole being to You.
Often your awareness ascends into peace, love, and a sense of the Divine Presence.
In practicing surrender, it’s helpful to place yourself in an attitude of surrender physically. You can hold your hands and arms in an attitude of surrender, bow your head, or kneel for several minutes.
7 — The Spiritual Eye — You focus steadily at the point one-half inch above where the eyebrows meet. When your mind is gathered here, you ascend beyond subjective momentums.
It helps to visualize that your mind is moving forward through a tunnel of indigo light toward a dot of white light which gleams at the distant mouth of the tunnel.
When your mind truly projects itself forward through the Spiritual Eye, you will easily ascend.
8 — The Higher Mind Witness — This ascent is the favorite of many mystics. Just as you watch and witness what is happening in the street or at the park, similarly witness your mind. Watch the thoughts and feelings come and go. Notice them, but do not become involved with any of them. Let them come and go.
Another way of practicing The Witness is to use “the parade” analogy. During the parade you stay on the sidewalk and watch the parade go by. You don’t run out onto the street and join the parade; you stay on the sidewalk and watch the parade go by, enjoying all of it.
Similarly, view the parade of your thoughts and feelings going past your view. Even the habitual thoughts and feelings go by in awhile. Let them go. Let them pass you. Don’t run out into the parade and lose your serene, perfect viewpoint. Enjoy being a witness. This is a highly effective ascent.
Find The Ascents You Like Most
These are the eight chief mystical Ascents. Enjoy them all and choose your favorites. One is all you need if it works well for you on all your negative and intense habitual thoughts and feelings. At first the thoughts and feelings appear to prevail over any attempt at ascent, don’t they? However, as you patiently proceed, you develop the knack.
Your mind is your helper, not your slave-master. Your soul and your higher mind actually are more powerful than your subjective thoughts and feelings, but your soul and higher mind await your sincere attempts to ascend and make a change. Remember, all these seemingly invincible thoughts and feelings became strong — in the first place — because at one point you chose them; you decided (many times over) to make them into subjective habits. You directed your awareness to move in those ways. Now you want changes and new directions.
In this Mystery, you’ve discovered ways to ascend and, for a time, stand free from your habitual torrents of thought.
Have fun! Practice Ascents until you can transcend your subjective mind at will. Enjoy the different Ascent techniques until you have two or three reliable ways that work well for you, even in the midst of trying times.
In difficult or challenging events, you will be able to rise above worry and ineffective thinking. Destructive ideas will not push you around, nor produce disaster. From the splendor of your Ascent you will have freedom to make better choices and to be at your best. You will also, from the vantage point of your Ascent, make contact with your higher mind and change the direction of your subjective thoughts and feelings. We’ll discuss these matters of redirection and transformation in the next phase of our journey.
I have found
A vantage point
From which to
See my mind.
There it is
My restless sea
But I’m in rapture
On the mountain peak.
Mind
Mind is ever the ruler of the universe.
—Plato, Greek Philosopher (429-347 BC)
Hi, Friend
Isn’t this fine? We’re together again.
How are you?
Your subjective mind can motivate and sustain your journey through the Mysteries. Help your mind to help you. Appreciate its struggles and its questions. Face and relate to your thoughts. Your mind will become your great ally in this worthy quest.
Try several methods of ascension. The chief mystical Ascents are:
Find the ones you like most. They’re all sublime.
The Conscious Mind
The conscious mind may be compared to a fountain playing in the sun and falling back into the great subterranean pool of the subconscious from which it rises.
—Sigmund Freud, Austrian Psychoanalyst (1856-1939)
Where would your mind go if it weren’t so tied up?
Consciously release — for the time being — all habitual thoughts and feelings as best you can. Think of each habitual thought as a piece of luggage you are setting down for a while. Set them all down one by one as they come into your awareness.
Now, sense where your mind goes — or tries to go.
Your mind naturally rises and immerses itself in the higher mind when it is unburdened, you’ll likely find. Your mind enters peace, security, joy, love, wisdom and creative power.
Farewell for now. May you know you live in love.
Just think:
We have the rest of our lives
To enjoy the Mysteries.
Why have we wasted
So much time?
Yes, I’m sure your prayer will be lovingly and charmingly received nevertheless.
The secret is: more love will flow back into you than you can ever direct outward. But, during your ascension endeavors do try to direct your love outward only. Then when you descend or conclude your practice, let love pour back into you and fill you.
You certainly are proceeding correctly. As your heart begins to expand you often feel buoyant and light. You may also feel exhilaration and utter delight. Soon you will swim in the Infinite Ocean.
I’m glad you’re so happy and well. Advanced mystics do leave their hearts open and expanded most of the time. The issue for those new to heart expansion is this: When you leave your heart expanded throughout the day, do you absorb the physical, mental and emotional pains and traumas of those around you? Most new mystics do. Often their mystical hearts begin to hurt in a prolonged manner, making it difficult for them to sleep at night.
Therefore, it’s wise for new mystics to leave the heart expanded in happy, congenial circumstances but to gather the heart energy back close to the chest when moving about in the hustle-bustle of the normal world.
Then, after a year or so of development, when you can sense the souls and essence of others — as well as their pains and traumas — you can leave your heart serenely and robustly expanded. The woes of others will not incapacitate you but will, rather, activate your love and compassion.
Your marked temperature rise in your chest can be a sign of stress, emotional strain, or perhaps too much effort being exerted. On the other hand, if you feel ecstasy and wondrous thrills in your chest, along with a delightful sensation of warmth, your mystic heart is awakening. Be sure not to strain or try to force an expansion. Just enjoy what is already happening.
If you become uncomfortable from too much ecstasy and heat, abandon your practice, take a shower and a nice nap. Resume your practice the next day only if you feel perfectly comfortable.
First, you will discover your True Self, which is distinct from your mind. You will live anew, free from the oppression of old self-limiting, self-destructive thoughts. Your mind will be clear and peaceful whenever you want it to be. You will think about anything you choose as deeply and as long as you wish.
As you progress in the Mysteries, your mind will be filled with thoughts of encouragement, gratitude, insight, love and joy.
You won’t worry anymore. You’ll contemplate answers and solutions instead. Later on, you’ll know and think alot about Spirit, with your mind full of bliss.
In the Mood of Love, you are ascended, but not absorbed. Then, in Absorption — which often follows the Mood of Love — you are temporarily absorbed. For a time you lose your awareness of a separate identity, but you don’t take on an identity with the Infinite. You leave all sense of identity behind for a few minutes.
No, unfortunately. Even if you can make your mind a blank, you are exercising mental will power to maintain blankness. Since the will portion of your mind is actively engaged, you can’t ascend.
Your question reveals a “quantity” rather than a “quality” perspective. However, this is a quality matter. If you seek to ascend with true sincerity, humility, and devotion, you can ascend today.
Different momentums of thought require different forms of ascension.
Raise your level of consciousness above your old subjective momentums.
It often takes repeated attempts to develop the subtle skill to ascend.
If you don’t first succeed, try, try again.
