Blissful brooding is a method of reflection and attunement which can lead to spiritual awareness. Through brooding, we seek to rise beyond the constant thoughts and feelings which block our awareness of Spirit. The practice is to calmly watch our part of the world while we keep our attention centered in the heart chakra (inside the spine in back of the heart). As the mind calms and releases thoughts/opinions, we become open to an awareness of soul and Spirit. Discover the new understandings and levels of consciousness which you can experience through blissful brooding.
Very often, as we learn about samadhi (spiritual absorption), we try to make it happen. Though our ego attempts to force spiritual absorption, it actually has to get out of the way in order for samadhi to occur.
Blissful brooding can take us more naturally and informally into the three steps of samyama described by Patanjali (concentration, contemplation, samadhi). Though meditation is more effective, blissful brooding is often easier, more joyful and may bring better results because we are more relaxed. (Note: Blissful brooding involves attention to the heart center while viewing the outer world in a calm, detached manner. It is important to avoid passive, sleepy meditation which allows subconscious thoughts and imaginings to float into the mind.)
