Guided Formless Meditation

How to go beyond the veil of ego and discover Spirit

Formless meditation is a jnana (wisdom) yoga practice which enables one to transcend the limitations of the false sense of self and discover Spirit within and everywhere. Explore eight formless meditation techniques to help you enter into soul awareness and contact with the Infinite Spirit. Formless meditation may become your favorite way to experience the peace, joy and freedom of the soul.

Spiritual Development, Guided Practices

Neti, Neti

Formless meditation is a way to experience the source of consciousness beyond form. The main practice of formless meditation is called neti, neti (not this, not this). Whenever you have a thought, release it with this attitude:   I am meditating in order to experience soul and Spirit. I seek to be free of other thoughts, feelings, desires and fears. Whenever anything comes into my mind or heart, I let it go as I mentally chant “neti, neti.”

Release all thoughts and feelings while mentally chanting. If thoughts or feelings return, continue chanting and release them again. It takes practice. As you are able to let go of thoughts and feelings, you enter a serene state of well being. Peace comes first and then, ultimately, bliss and joy.

  • There are two main approaches to meditation: Form and Formless
  • Formless meditation brings an awareness of Spirit beyond form
  • Formless meditation also helps to expand the consciousness, releasing the limitations of ego, the false sense of self
  • Yogis use the term atman to refer to soul, the spirit within
  • Meditation enables us to shift gears in consciousness — after going high, it is important to thoroughly come back into the body and senses
  • Neti, neti (not this, not this) is the main formless meditation technique
