The Vedanta religion focuses on ultimate reality. Not only does it lead aspirants to transcendental consciousness — beyond normal sense and mental awareness — it leads beyond the transcendental into pure spirit — or absolute knowledge.
Metaphysicians are particularly interested in higher consciousness. They attune with it every day. Many metaphysicians have devotedly abided in higher consciousness for years and decades. Religious Science, Unity, and Christian Science are the leading metaphysical churches in the world, but there are a number of smaller groups also.
Rabbi David Eliezrie, Director of the Chabad Community Center in Anaheim, California, beckoned us into his office. A frank, straightforward, and very kindly man, he shook hands. He was medium height, with short, dark hair and dark brown eyes magnified by glasses. When he spoke, his voice was soft, gracious. He wore regular clothing — a shirt and pants — not the braids or hat I was expecting.
Rabbi Frank Stern of Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Ana, California is a tall, confident man with a resonant voice. He has dark, curly, thinning hair, a moustache and short beard — like a Vandyke but rounded under his chin — and appears to be in his forties. He was dressed casually, gray slacks and a white shirt, with the top button open.
