Let Yoga Free You

Explore ways to experience smriti, divine memory

Yogis study the “fogs of our mind and the spells of our heart” which keep us from remembering that we are essentially Spirit expressing through a body and mind. Explore what keeps you from knowing your true self. Use yoga to remember that you are soul and Spirit.

First Steps

Remembering Your True Self

When we talk about enlightenment, we’re talking about remembering our true self. In daily life, we get preoccupied. We don’t even realize we have a soul — that part of us which is eternal, pure and painless.  Divine memory (smriti) is remembering, awakening to something we already know deep within our spiritual consciousness. When we become free of other mental/emotional preoccupations and the false self, we easily remember who we truly are — divine souls.

  • Enlightenment is remembering who you truly are, awakening to the true self
  • Sri Ramakrishna: Under the spell of God’s maya (delusion), you forget your true nature. You forget you are heir to the infinite glories of the Father.
  • As we seek to experience the true self, we notice more clearly what is keeping us separate from Spirit
  • Patanjali taught that there are five kinds of ideas which block spiritual awareness: right knowledge, wrong knowledge, memories, numbness and fantasy
  • Sri Ramakrishna taught that two strong drives keep us from spiritual awareness
  • Yogis identify six fetters (chains) which preoccupy our consciousness and prevent us from remembering our true nature:  anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance and prejudice
