Vidya — Finding the Sublime Current

How to move from feebleness to empowerment

Yoga teaches about vidya, the current which helps us awaken to higher consciousness. Step by step, it leads toward the harmony of body, mind, and spirit. Life improves as we solve problems and make better decisions. Through yoga practice, this force propels us into contact with soul and Spirit. Discover how to attune with vidya and bring more peace, love and joy into your life.

Essential Life Skills, Vidya & Avidya

The Flow of Vidya

Attunement with vidya takes us from bondage to freedom. We move from a sense of feebleness to empowerment. Vidya helps us release the fetters of anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance, prejudice and jealousy which chain us emotionally. The force of vidya brings more love, compassion, joy and peace into our lives. We realize that we are spiritual beings who are developing a growing awareness of Spirit.

When practicing yoga, often within weeks, you develop a sense of the vidya current. It becomes clearer as you meditate on it. At first vidya may seem subtle, but awareness of it gradually grows stronger. As a result of finding it, you begin to understand that Spirit is your source, nature and essence. You realize:  Spirit is the force leading me Godward.

  • Vidya is the force which moves us Godward, bringing a growing awareness of soul and Spirit
  • Avidya is the opposite current which causes us to ignore Spirit, making decisions resulting in unnecessary suffering
  • Tamas, rajas and sattvas are the three gunas, forces of nature, which affect our behaviors and choices
  • Attunement with vidya helps us move through the gunas successfully
  • The force of vidya helps us release the fetters (chains) — anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance, prejudice and jealousy — which keep us emotionally bound
  • Satsang, fellowship with those expressing vidya, uplifts and supports one’s spiritual life
