RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

On Karma Yoga — Part 2

Can one be free of selfish motives?

Karma yogis move through several stages as they develop and mature. In the beginning one dedicates all one’s action to the Lord. The next stage is the recognition that Spirit is working through you. In the final stage, the devotee discovers that he/she is an instrument of the Divine. Discover the joy and happiness which comes through the practice of karma yoga.

Karma Yoga

A Happy Instrument

In the second stage of karma yoga, you begin to experience ecstasy as you serve. The former attitude of:  I am doing this for You becomes Spirit is working through me. You realize that it is actually the Lord who gives you life and the ability to move, think and speak. At this level, serving others brings ecstasy, bliss and delight.

In the third level of karma yoga you come to the conclusion that life and consciousness are expressing through you and that you are an instrument of Spirit. You realize that all work and activities are being done through you as Spirit’s instrument. Enlightenment occurs as one discovers that he/she is actually an instrument of the Divine.

  • Studying cause and effect in one’s life and the lives of others can aid in the practice of karma yoga
  • Releasing sankalpa (selfish motive) is necessary to grow in karma yoga and be happier in life
  • First stage of karma yoga:  Dedicate all your actions to the Lord — For You, for You, for You.
  • Second Stage:  Recognize that Spirit is working through you. This realization brings ecstasy, bliss and delight
  • Third Stage:  You discover that you are an instrument of Spirit and all action is being done through you. Your attitude is:  I am like a flute being played by the Lord.
  • Enlightenment comes as one discovers: I am an instrument of the Divine.
