The Gunas and Your Calling

How best to express through your work

Spirit manifests everyone and everything through three qualities/natural forces called gunas. Each of us expresses through a combination of sattvas guna, rajas guna and tamas guna. As you determine which guna is dominantly expressing, you may find clues about how best to live and understand life.

Sunday Morning Talks

Everything Is a Combination of the Three Gunas

Guna means quality (element or natural force.) Ancient yogis discovered that everything which exists is made up of a combination of three qualities. While one quality may be dominant, everything is composed of the three elements called sattvas, rajas, and tamas guna.

Understanding how the gunas are operating in our lives can help us determine how best to express through our work and daily life.

  • Dharma, a concept from India, explains that everything in creation is moving from gross to subtle
  • The three qualities called gunas express in everyone and everything
  • Tamas guna is the quality of inertia which tends to be still and unmoving
  • Rajas guna is the tendency to go, go, go in mindless activity
  • Sattvas guna is the quality which brings balance
  • While one quality may be dominant within us, we are composed of all three
