RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Yogi Sees the Gunas In Action

What do you see?

In the view of yoga, Spirit manifests the world through the interaction of the three gunas (forces of nature). As we study the characteristics of each guna, we can begin to see them at work in our lives and in the world. Yogis and mystics seek to go beyond the gunas and relate directly to Spirit. You can improve your life by understanding the gunas and learning how to work with them.

Sunday Morning Sessions

Tamas — Rajas — Sattvas

Guna means qualities. There are three forces or qualities which, in the view of yoga, empower and manifest the world. Tamas guna is the quality of density which makes us unwilling to move or try. Rajas guna is the quality of mindless activity which causes us to go, go, go. Sattvas guna is the quality of harmony and balance. As you practice yoga, you begin to recognize the effect of the gunas both within yourself and in situations around you.

Sattvas guna is the quality or force which tends to balance things. When you live in harmony and balance, you begin to discover your true self. You find attributes like peace, love and joy. Yoga practice tends to make you more sattvic, bringing an awareness of the many fine possibilities in life.

  • Yogis find that Spirit manifests the world through three forces or qualities (gunas)
  • Tamas guna is density, the power to occupy time and space, to take and hold a form. But it is also the force of inertia, causing one to be resistant to change
  • Rajas guna is activity, the power to move. It can also motivate mindless activity, causing one to go, go, go without wisdom or insight
  • Sattvas guna brings harmony and balance
  • Yoga practice generally makes one more sattvic, able to understand and work with the gunas
  • When we go beyond the gunas, we discover that Spirit is the substance and reality of everything
