RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Yoga of Wisdom — Part 1

Can jnana yoga help in letting go of attachments?

Through dedicated yoga practice, especially wisdom (jnana) yoga, we can gradually discover our spiritual essence. One technique is to release all thoughts and feelings until we arrive at our spiritual core, the soul. Swami Vivekananda’s method of teaching jnana yoga was to start with soul — to focus on the desire to know the source of light and life within. So, how does one become aware of pure being?

Keys to Higher Yogas

Find the Light Within

Gradually, as you practice jnana yoga, you will find you are pure being, pure Spirit, and (in several ways) beyond the limitations of nature.

Through meditation and other practices, one transcends the false sense of self and contacts the inner light. One method is to chant:  nahung nahung, tuhu, tuhu. It means not I, not I, but You, but You. We are seeking to take the focus off the ego and put it on Spirit. Chanting in Sanskrit often focuses more energy than using the English translation. As you chant, encourage your inner self to come forth, to reveal itself and shine.

  • The goal of each yoga path is to know and live in an awareness of Spirit
  • Through jnana yoga practice, one releases attachments and lives with a greater sense of what is worthwhile
  • One of the main goals is to discriminate between the real and the unreal
  • A favorite technique is to chant neti, neti (not this, not this), releasing all thoughts and feelings until arriving at your spiritual core, the soul
  • Swami Vivekananda taught jnana yoga with a focus on the soul wherein you dismiss every thought and emotion until you find the resplendent self
  • Another technique is to chant nahung nahung, tuhu, tuhu (not I, not I, but You, but You) while focusing on the Divine self within
