RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Meeting Baba Hari Dass

What a silent yogi told me

In 1971 when I first met the yoga master Baba Hari Dass, he hadn’t actually spoken for 17 years. On the day we met, he communicated by writing on a small chalkboard. We meditated for hours together. We became close friends and corresponded for many years. I’d like to share the advice he gave me early in my years of teaching yoga.

The Day I Met Baba Hari Dass

I want to tell you about how I met Baba Hari Dass and how we became friends. He was thin, average of height and wore his hair in braids. He appeared handsome and athletic in a kingly way. We enjoyed a blissful day together and he became a wonderful part of my life. (Since he was in silence, all of our “conversations” involved me talking and him writing on his chalkboard.)

About one o’clock on that first day, I asked if we could meditate. We both got comfortable. Then he touched me on my little finger. The next thing I knew, hours must have flown by. It was sunset and time to depart. We had enjoyed a magnificent meditation. I didn’t want to leave. I was told he would write to me if I wished. We corresponded for the next thirty-plus years.

  • Baba Hari Dass:  You can prepare the finest feast but it is up to people whether they partake or not.
  • Babaji:  A good prayer:  Lord, love me to love You more.
  • Babaji:  Your Yoga Center is God’s center and you are the manager. Allow God to be the boss. Report to Him often, like a manager to his boss.
  • Babaji:  You don’t have to teach people who aren’t happy to see you.
  • Babaji:  In my opinion, Ramana Maharshi was the greatest yogi of the 20th century. He encouraged people to search within themselves, asking, ‘Who am I?’ many times a day until they discovered their souls.
