How does a devotee receive unconditional love? There are several states on the way to pure love: faith (shraddha); single-minded devotion to your ideal (nishta); ongoing devotion (bhakti); and relationship with God (bhava). Love grows and grows. It is dynamic.
Through nishta, one-pointed dedication and determination, comes bhakti. If you don’t get bhakti, this love of God, and you’ve been trying to for a long time, it’s usually because you’re lacking in nishta. It’s not because you’re lacking bhakti. Develop more one-pointed yearning until the emotional nature is centered.
