How do you react to being criticized? Do you feel hurt or angry at the person delivering the comments? Or, rather, do you evaluate what was said to see if there is some truth in it?
None of us like thinking we’ve done something wrong or haven’t done a good enough job. Would you like to try yoga practices that give you the tools to stay centered if criticized, to deal appropriately with constructive criticism, and also learn how to dismiss critiques that are perhaps neither accurate nor helpful?
One day Buddha was viciously insulted. Buddha calmly replied, “What happens when a letter is sent but no one is there to receive it?” The critic answered, “The letter is returned to the sender.” “Just so,” said the Buddha. “I do not receive what you have sent me.” That’s Buddha’s way and also yoga’s way. You decide whether it’s appropriate to receive the letter/critique.
Criticism is part of life and how we deal with it is the difference between being happy or being miserable. Discover the different ways you can know whether the criticism you receive is valid and helpful or a false, hurtful, inappropriate statement from someone whose view isn’t accurate.
We ask you to commit two hours a week to selfless service. This service can be anything you choose ranging from helping a family member or neighbor to volunteering at a nonprofit organization.
This commitment is solely between you and your inner self.
