RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Signs of Progress in Meditation

Are you experiencing more love and joy?

Meditation can become a thrilling, exciting journey. Yoga can show you where you are and how to proceed toward higher consciousness. One of the main signs of progress is growing love and joy. Explore the advice of yoga masters such as Swami Adiswarananda (Meditation and Its Practices), Patanjali (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali) and Baba Hari Dass. You already have a soul and a connection with Infinite Spirit. You can discover these realities as you progress in meditation.

Keys to Higher Yogas, Meditation

Becoming a Yogi

Progress in meditation helps the mind become more focused and less troubled by negative people and situations. As you center your awareness and focus the mind, you begin to develop one-pointedness. Patanjali (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali) describes how the one-pointed state leads to increased spiritual and soul awareness.

As a result of becoming more one-pointed, you are able to control your speech, choosing what you would truly like to say. You find tranquility and become a person of peace. You develop patience and the ability to go beyond the ego (false sense of self), mind and senses. As you enter into the buddhi (witness consciousness), you are able to view people and situations with clarity. You make better decisions. Your thoughts and emotions become harmonious and you experience greater depths of absorption. As you advance in meditation, you become increasingly free of the fetters of anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance and prejudice. You are becoming a yogi.

  • Spiritual experiences vary from person to person. Deep meditations can bring mystical experiences, visions or absorptions in Spirit
  • One may begin to experience the kundalini (winding power) rising up the spine
  • The mind/emotions become calmer, more focused and one-pointed
  • As you progress, you discover the atman, the eternal self
  • Samadhi, the merging of the individual consciousness into the Infinite Consciousness, is a high state of absorption
