The Three Gunas

How do we let go of fear and live in harmony?

In the view of yoga, there are three forces of nature (gunas) which allow everything in the universe to function. These gunas affect our attitudes, personalities and daily lives. Yoga practices help us bring these forces into harmony. Learn a technique which helps balance these powerful momentums and see how life can be improved.

Go Beyond Sattvas Guna

When people start yoga, they generally become more sattvic, harmonious, balanced, conscious and thoughtful. They begin to bring their lives, diets, sleep habits and work into balance. As this constructive force becomes more dominant, they are capable of greater accomplishments. Some people call sattvas guna the success guna because it brings balance and insight.

When you are in sattvas guna, you experience the harmony and balance of your inner self but are not yet fully aware of the soul. While reflecting the soul, it is not the soul. Yogis seek to bring the balance of sattvas guna into their lives so that they may move beyond it and experience Spirit directly.

  • Tamas guna is the quality of retentivity, the force which brings and holds things together. It makes issues, projects and daily life steadier
  • Rajas guna is mindless, relentless activity. It empowers our breath, heartbeat, thoughts and feelings
  • Sattvas guna brings balance and equilibrium, allowing the various factors in our lives to come into harmony
  • We often experience difficulties in our lives when one guna denominates
  • Focusing on the kurma nadi point helps to balance the gunas and promotes steadiness
  • The goal is to harmonize the gunas and then go beyond them into awareness of soul and Spirit
