RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Stages of the Heart

How can we move from a dark heart to a clear, joyous heart?

Sri Yukteswar Giri (The Holy Science) taught that there are five stages of the heart. These stages not only describe the way you feel but also the state of your consciousness. Knowing them can help in understanding one’s life, as well as the lives of fellow seekers. Exploring these stages can make clear where you are on the spiritual path.

Bhakti Yoga

A Spiritual Being in a Spiritual Universe

As a result of being devoted, your heart and mind become clear. Sri Yukteswar uses the term clean. The ignorance and delusion to which you were accustomed is washed away. You now see things in a new light. You recognize that this spiritual reality is expressing as matter, our bodies, the entire human race and the galaxies.

In your clear state, you behold and comprehend Spirit. You understand that you are a spiritual being and this entire universe is an expression of Spirit. You are serene but also invigorated by Spirit every day. You find life wonderful and thrilling.

  • Dark Heart:  one is only aware of the physical world, insensitive to the existence of God, the soul or higher values
  • Propelled Heart:  one is actively, vigorously seeking meaning, purpose and understanding. One is engaged in a search for a teacher and a path
  • Steady Heart:  one finds a place to grow and develop, a place where answers and spiritual nourishment are available
  • Devoted Heart:  one’s heart is full of love and appreciation. It is humbly developing spiritual awareness
  • Clear (or Clean) Heart:  one beholds and comprehends Spirit, knowing that everything, including oneself, is an expression of Spirit
