RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

How to Chant a Mantram

Can chanting calm a busy mind?

The yogic definition for mantra/mantram is cosmic syllables which rescue the mind. Chanting a mantra can lift your mind from day-to-day awareness into higher levels of consciousness. Discover how chanting allows you to experience the peace and love of soul and Spirit. (Mantra is the Sanskrit word while mantram is the modern Hindi word for the same term.)

Mantra Yoga

Awareness of Soul and Spirit

Chanting a mantra can lift you from mental activity into an awareness of Spirit. The most common mantra is Om (Aum). As you chant Om, it can rescue your mind, making you aware of soul and Spirit.

Many yogis have favorite mantras and employ them as a way of going deeper in meditation. Those who practice bhakti yoga (the yoga of love and devotion) think of the Lord and chant His name, transcending normal physical and mental activity in order to enter into spiritual awareness. Raja yogis (the yoga of attuned will) love to chant Hong sau (I am Spirit). Jnana yogis (the yoga of wisdom) chant neti neti, (not this, not this) as they release one thought after another until they abide in the soul.

  • There are many different mantras which devotees employ as a way of going deeper into meditation
  • The most common mantra is Om (Aum). Chanting it can bring awareness of soul and Spirit
  • Chanting takes you through several levels of awareness on the way to higher spiritual states
  • Ultimately, the mantra’s syllables/words become an energy surge which lifts you into superconscious awareness
  • Chanting a mantra is not just repeating words. It is allowing the mantra to rescue the mind so you can experience and abide in your soul
