RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Raja Yoga in a Nutshell — Part 2

Explore how the right use of will leads to truth and goodness

Raja yogis strive to realize the one vast soul and discover their oneness with all beings. They realize that their essence is Spirit — the source of all life and consciousness. Explore raja yoga techniques which allow the ego, the false sense of self, to yield to the power and beauty of the soul.

Raja Yoga

Practice and Grow in Raja Yoga

In raja yoga, union of the individual with the Infinite Consciousness is gained through control of the waves of consciousness (Patanjali’s five kinds of ideas). This leads to an awareness of the true self, the soul. The control of these mental/emotional activities is developed through the right use of the will and the cessation of ego indulgence. The right use of the will is the steady effort to abide in spiritual being, in the oneness of shared life. To cease from ego indulgence is to gain humility. When one is no longer dominated by the senses, one is free to love — to live in love. In a nutshell, this is how one practices and grows in raja yoga.

  • The right use of the will is the steady effort to be aware of Spirit
  • The mahat realization is that we are all individual parts of one great soul
  • Raja yogis cultivate humility, truth, beauty and goodness rather than indulging the ego
  • Practicing silence promotes soul awareness and lessens the power of the ego
  • Non-attachment practices (called viraja) can free us from the tyranny of the ego and open us to experience the soul
  • Patanjali shares the stages of non-attachment
