RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Benefits of Chanting and Japa — Part 1

Chanting can lead to deep meditation

Japa is the spiritual practice of repeating a sacred word or phrase which can bring the mind to a state of concentration. Learn the essentials of japa, chanting and mantra. Find out how they can lead to the joy of deep meditation and absorption in Spirit.

Go Farther with Meditation, Mantram, Chanting / Japa

Syllables That Rescue the Mind

Japa is chanting a sacred word or syllable. Mantra means cosmic syllables that rescue the mind. That’s the most succinct definition. The longer definition is:  that which when repeated, with reflection on its meaning, gives liberation and saves the seeker.

  • Chanting makes it easier to concentrate and enter deep meditation
  • A word or phrase (usually in Sanskrit) is called a mantra
  • From Patanjali: the mantra Om can help remove obstacles on the spiritual path and lead us to self-realization
  • Yoga is control of the vrittis (waves of consciousness). Chanting a mantra creates a strong vritti that leads to concentration and meditation
  • Chanting a mantra in the chakras (energy centers) frees us from negative samskaras (habit patterns)
