RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Benefits of Chanting and Japa — Part 2

You can develop more devotion

This second talk in the four-part japa series focuses on using japa (chanting) to increase devotion and concentration, allowing deeper absorption in Spirit. Explore the different levels of awareness that can be realized through chanting. Use japa to become superconscious, awakening the kundalini and experiencing the joy of pure Spirit.

Go Farther with Meditation, Chanting / Japa

Leading You Beyond the Mind

Meditation leads beyond the mind. It can lift your awareness to the serenity of the buddhi, where you’re peacefully witnessing the mind, or it can reveal mahat, a sense of oneness with everyone. It can also reveal prema, a love for God so strong that you transcend body awareness. The key meditation is the realization I am Spirit. You realize that beyond the form, beyond the sound, beyond this sense of self, buddhi or mahat, is the awareness of Spirit.

  • Japa is the repetition of a sacred word or phrase; if a Sanskrit word or phrase is used, that word or phrase is called a mantra
  • Ideally, japa leads to concentration. Concentration becomes absorption which leads to illumination, awareness of Spirit
  • Chanting Om can take you to the source of all sound, to all-pervading pure consciousness
  • Japa creates a vritti (wave of consciousness) that’s designed to free the mind of other vrittis
  • Japa done steadily and with devotion creates a strong counter-samskara (habit pattern) which overcomes negative samskaras
  • You can encourage kundalini activity by chanting a mantra in each chakra
