RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Sex Force and Transmutation

Is it possible to develop more courage and creativity?

Through spiritual practice we can discover holiness — the holiness of ourselves, of others, and of the world around us. The two main forces which block this realization are lust and greed. Transmutation of the sex drive liberates us from preoccupation with sex; transmutation of greed usually brings abundance and faith. It also prepares the nerves for the tremendous rush of energy which comes as the latent spiritual energy inside us awakens. When the sex force is used in a constructive way, the resulting transmutation enables us to turn from limited consciousness in order to embrace the Divine.

The Sex Force is a Gift

The sex force is a marvelous gift of God which can lead either to wholeness or, if used thoughtlessly, to separation. Patanjali explains that if we transmute the sex force and allow it to be constructive, we discover what it really means to be a man or woman.

As a result of channeling our creative energy and offering it to Spirit, the goodness of our true nature begins to express. Serenity and peace develop and grow into mellow, expressive joy. We develop more courage and our karmas (our cause and effect relationship with life) become more stable. The transmutation process enables us to bring more joy and creativity into our lives.

  • We are born to create. Repression happens when we do not deal with this powerful life force
  • Excessive sexual preoccupation depletes the vital life force and causes nerve burn as the kundalini (inner spiritual energy) awakens
  • Transmutation of the sex force prepares the nerves for the rush of energy which comes as the kundalini rises
  • Ojas, which forms as a result of the transmutation process, is necessary for the kundalini to rise and take us into higher states of consciousness
  • As we channel the creative life force, we develop stability, serenity, peace and courage
