RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Spiritual Diet

Can the foods we eat affect our spiritual development?

Yogis have much to share about which foods are (and are not) conducive to spiritual practices. Good nutrition helps to create the proper conditions for the awakening and maintenance of spiritual life. Sri Ramakrishna and Baba Hari Dass, among others, share their views about diets which support spiritual growth. Recurring themes are moderation and different individual needs. As we apply these truths to diet, we are able to support one another in the area of nutrition.

Sunday Morning Talks

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Sri Ramakrishna explained how a mother cooks one way for a certain child and a different way for others. He also taught the importance of appreciating each person and their path. The point is that everyone is unique and has different needs. There is no need for bigotry in either religion or diet. We can love one another and strive to be of assistance in both areas.

So, regarding diet and a spiritual path, each is entitled to their own point of view. Everyone benefits when we appreciate and support one another. Awakening is a personal journey. It boils down to different strokes for different folks.

  • Sri Ramakrishna taught that the ideal of peace between world religions is one of sharing, not condemning
  • Diet plays a major role in a healthy life or an early death
  • Diet also helps to create the proper conditions for awakening and maintaining spiritual life
  • The yogi, when successful, awakens tremendous spiritual energy in the spine which needs certain nutrients
  • When you practice good nutrition, your ability to think is enhanced
