Part three of our series focuses on the transformations which peace brings into our lives and also into the world. Pema Chödrön (Practicing Peace) writes that war and peace start in the hearts of individuals. Our personal transformations inevitably lead to greater peace in the world. We replace hatred with love and compassion. Explore the many beautiful transformations which come as you abide in peace.
War and conflict begin when we harden our hearts. We do this in minor ways by being irritable, impolite, inconsiderate, selfish, impatient and hurtful. We harden our hearts and minds in major ways when we practice hatred or prejudice.
A fundamentalist mind is a mind which has become rigid. First, the heart closes and the mind hardens on a viewpoint. Next, we justify our violent thoughts and feelings toward others. The only loving solution comes from a change of heart, from softening what is rigid and entrenched.
We ask you to commit two hours a week to selfless service. This service can be anything you choose ranging from helping a family member or neighbor to volunteering at a nonprofit organization.
This commitment is solely between you and your inner self.
