Get In Your Right Mind to Do Yoga

What is the unifying mind and why is it important?

Both mystics and yogis believe that there is a higher level of consciousness beyond the normal thinking mind. We have an everyday differentiating and separating mind which is essential for survival, work and relationships. We also have a higher mind which can experience the reality of Spirit and spiritual dimensions. Yogis refer to the higher mind as the unifying mind because it reveals underlying unity instead of endless diversity. Yoga practice helps to develop the unifying mind through which you can experience your soul, Spirit and spiritual realities.

Yoga in Daily Life

Something Greater

Both the dividing mind and the unifying mind are really important. Yoga helps improve your normal separating mind, making it sharper and clearer. However, the dividing mind can never bring lasting happiness and well being. In order to experience the joys of yoga and the reality of Spirit, you need the higher, uniting mind.

With practice the normal mind is happy to yield to something greater than itself and experience the harmony of body, mind and spirit. As you work with the unifying mind, you can sense the oneness, glory and beauty in all things.

  • The normal mind is a separator, focusing on differences by comparing, contrasting and evaluating
  • We need the differentiating, separating mind in order to function
  • We need the higher mind to experience yoga and to realize Spirit
  • Yogis seek the unifying mind, a mind which is striving to see the underlying unity in all creation
  • Sri Ramakrishna:  God is directly perceived by the mind, but not this ordinary mind. It is the pure, clear mind that perceives God.
