RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Your Subjective Life — Why People Do the Things They Do — Part 3

Free yourself from limiting states of mind

A pleasant and constructive subjective mind is necessary for a happy life. Through yoga practice, meditation, and contact with the inner self, the quality of our ongoing thoughts and feelings can improve. Discover how to use yoga to become free from the mental/emotional states which limit happiness and a finer quality of life.

Yoga in Daily Life

The Six Fetters

Yogis describe six fetters (chains) which limit our well being. The fetters (anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance and prejudice) are the addictive demands which must be released in order to have a harmonious subjective mind. Yoga prescribes many ways to release these chains. If we understand and deal with them, their dominance lessens and we can have a progressively delightful life.

  • The subjective mind is the ongoing flow of thoughts and feelings in which we live
  • Addictive demands — emotional states that come when we don’t get what we want — can haunt us and block our happiness (often for years and years)
  • The six fetters (anger, fear, guilt, grief, arrogance and prejudice) must be released in order to have a happy subjective mind
  • Most pain and suffering occur in the ego, the false sense of self
  • Seek and enjoy soul contact. The more you meditate and contact the soul, the more you’ll be free of the fetters and addictions. (If you are having mental health problems, however, it would be wise to seek professional psychological help.)
