Are Yogis Mystics?

Explore how both yoga and mysticism lead to spiritual awareness

Mystics around the world believe there are higher levels of consciousness beyond the normal thinking mind. Yogis know this to be true through experiencing these sublime states. Explore the many similarities between yoga and mysticism. Discover how both paths make available a finer quality of life.

Yoga Perspectives

The Golden Rule Is Basic Yoga

Make a list of how you would like to be treated. Now, start treating others in this same way. As you apply the law of karma — cause and effect — you will notice a change in the way others treat you. You will begin to see different consequences in your daily life. Consciously practicing the Golden Rule is basic yoga:  Treat other people the way you would like to be treated. This leads to a finer quality of life, revealing your spiritual connection with everyone.

  • Most mystical traditions promote character development
  • Mystical training emphasizes the development of sympathy
  • Living with expanded sympathy leads to cosmic consciousness, an awareness of Spirit everywhere
  • Mystics realize that all life is precious beyond human comprehension — both their own life and that of others
  • As compassion grows, the realization of non-violence develops
  • Applying the Golden Rule and treating others as you would like to be treated is directly working with the law of karma (cause and effect)
