Yoga comes from the ancient Sanskrit word yug, meaning to yoke or join together. Sri Ramakrishna explains it this way: The meaning of yoga is to be again united with your supreme nature. The stages of meditation have been described by great yogis and written about in yoga scriptures (The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, the Bhagavad Gita and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, for example.) Receive inspiration by enjoying their profound words. Participate in a practice to experience the bliss of the true self. You can be uplifted into soul and spiritual awareness as you progress through the levels of meditation.
Bhagavad Gita: The mind disciplined by the practice of yoga attains quietude. When you attain quietude, then you behold the infinite self. The little self gets a chance to behold the soul. In experiencing the soul, we become totally satisfied — free of desire. We finally know who we truly are. There is a sense of immense gratification, satisfaction and wholeness.
In this quietude, when we are not commenting, wanting or fearing anything, bliss comes. Ecstasy is a characteristic of contact with the soul. While the normal mind and senses do not have access to it, the purified intellect grasps spiritual awareness to some extent. Bliss belongs to the soul and is always part of us. When we finally become still enough in meditation, we find that bliss is our true home.
