How Do I Find the Best Yoga for Me?

Explore the four main yogas to find the one that fits your needs. The way to find the yoga which is best for you is to try all four of the main yogas. In this way, you can determine which one helps you most comfortably and effectively to live in a state of harmony and increased well being.

Is Yoga a Religion?

People of many different spiritual paths practice yoga. Yoga is a spiritual science which is based on experience, not faith. Whatever your religion or spiritual path — or even if you are agnostic or an atheist — yoga can help improve your health and well being.

What are the Four Main Yogas?

Which is best for you? Each of the four main yogas provides tools to live in harmony of body, mind and spirit, as well as establishing a connection with Infinite Spirit. When you find the yoga which best fits your nature, you progress more quickly and easily on the path. Enjoy trying different yoga practices and find those which are most beneficial.

Samyama — The Three Limbs of Meditation

The great yogi Patanjali used the term samyama to describe the three levels of meditation. Knowing the stages can help you understand how you are progressing and how to advance. You can receive higher states of awareness as you learn and develop. Peace and joy can come into your life as you progress in meditation.

Are Some Paths Better Than Others?

All spiritual paths come from God. Because we are all unique, a certain path may suit your particular needs better than another. That, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that that path is best for everyone else or that it is superior. Your path may prove to be the best one for you and help you progress spiritually.

What is a Seeker?

Find out if you’re a spiritual seeker. Do you crave a relationship with God/Spirit, soul, higher consciousness and/or lasting happiness? If you do, then you may be a seeker. Explore the spiritual characteristics of a seeker and what they are actively propelled to find.

Patanjali’s Five Kinds of Ideas

Patanjali taught that yoga is control of vrittis, the waves of thoughts and feelings. He identified five kinds of ideas (thoughts and feelings) which keep us from knowing our true self. Learn to recognize which type of idea is blocking your attempts to enjoy a clear mind.

Patanjali’s Second Step — The Niyamas

The first two steps of Patanjali’s Eightfold Path focus on character development. The niyamas are wonderful observances which can help us thrive.

Patanjali’s First Step — The Yamas

The yamas of the Eightfold Path are guidelines for spiritual growth. As we discover and abide in our true self, the soul’s qualities naturally express through us. Each of the five yamas (positive character traits) already exist within us.

Working With Your Life Force

The fourth level of Patanjali’s Eightfold Path is pranayama, working with the life force. Yogis recognize the importance of prana (life force) which gives us life and the ability to be active physically, mentally and emotionally. Explore various types of pranayams which can bring more vital energy into your life.

How to Succeed

As you may know, we do not charge for our courses. All Yoga World content is free and available to you with our blessings. However, we do have a simple, but important request that’s key to the transformations necessary to succeed on the path.

We ask you to commit two hours a week to selfless service. This service can be anything you choose ranging from helping a family member or neighbor to volunteering at a nonprofit organization.
