RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Finding Peace

Is it possible to be free from desires and fears?

This is the second video in the series on peace. Both yogis and Buddhists have identified a major factor which is crucial to our experience of peace. Yogis call it craving or attachment and Buddhists call it shenpa, the driving force behind our desires. Pema Chödrön (Practicing Peace) writes that daily meditation is the best way to deal with the restless wanting which leads to desires. Explore practical hints to end the cycles of craving and aversion and find peace.

Spiritual Development

The Four “Rs”

Pema Chödrön relays practical hints to stop the cycles of craving/aversion and to find peace. She calls them the four “Rs:”

  1. Recognize when shenpa (the driving force behind our desires) is occurring.
  2. Refrain from scratching that itch, pursuing the desire.
  3. Relax the underlying urge to scratch.
  4. Resolve to interrupt the momentums of shenpa for the rest of your life. Shenpa is no longer ruling my life and wrecking my peace.
  • Peace can be found by going within and connecting to the source of peace through prayer and meditation
  • Both yogis and Buddhist have identified a major blockage in the development of peace
  • Pema Chödrön describes shenpa (the driving force behind our desires) as a disturber of peace
  • Often, when shenpa arises, people follow its impulse and make poor choices
  • Through meditation we can locate the urges and desires within us and interrupt that momentum
  • By developing the ability to stay fully present and notice shenpa, we cultivate both peace and loving kindness
