RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Mystery of Tapas — Part 1

Explore how the practice of tapas can renew your life

Would you like to know the secret to transforming old, unproductive habits into higher levels of consciousness? Sri Ramakrishna says the answer is tapas, effort that transforms. Discover how the practice of tapas can renew your daily life, redirecting you in a positive manner.

Spiritual Development, Habits, Transformation, Mantram

Renewal through Tapas

Tapas has many aspects:  cutting off energy from flowing the same old way, and then channeling it in a new way; and also gathering that energy, centering that energy, and redirecting that energy. Tapas is like melting down old metal pieces and then reshaping that metal into new forms for new purposes. Similarly, the yogi melts down old forms of his or her life, renews the life impulse, renews oneself, and blesses the world as a consequence.

  • The main focus of tapas is transformation — to melt down the old and create something new
  • Tapas has many aspects: gathering energy, centering energy, redirecting energy
  • Yogis use tapas to melt down old habits, blockages and character flaws
  • Tapas is not just repetitive activity; it is intensity, mainly spiritual intensity
  • Chant one of Sri Ramakrishna’s favorite mantras:  “Ami yantra, tumi yantri” and let Spirit move within you
  • Use tapas to redirect the way negative factors have affected your body, speech and mind
