RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

My Friend Sister Margarita

Can life be full of wonder, joy and delight?

As I began teaching yoga in Costa Mesa, California in the 1970s, I met a nun named Sister Margarita. She was middle-aged, full of love and joy — a very happy person. Her main message was that the Christian life was not meant to be one of sin and regret but full of joy, seeing and acknowledging the wonder of life.

The Wonder-ologist

As I was teaching yoga in Southern California in the 1970s, a group of nuns began taking my classes. One was Sister Margarita. She happened to be quite famous and spoke to huge gatherings of thousands of people around the world.

Sister Margarita had a beautiful message — that it is important to recognize one’s sins, ask for forgiveness and then repent. She emphasized, however, that we are not meant to focus on sin all the time, but on God and God’s creation. Christianity is about joy, love and wonder. She would say:  Tell me 300 wonderful things about yourself. (Most of her listeners could only think of three or four.) She taught and demonstrated that life is meant to be full of happiness and delight.

  • Her message was that life is one of wonder, joy, happiness and delight
  • Sister Margarita:  Tell me 300 wonderful things about yourself!
  • She traveled around the country in a van with Wonder on her license plate
  • She was known as the wonder-ologist
  • Her sister nuns delighted in sneaking gas into her tank to express their love and add to her joy
