RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Finding the Buddhi

What does it take to cross the river of maya/delusion?

True grit (courage and steadfastness) and unshakeable buddhi (witness consciousness) are necessary to grow in spiritual awareness. The yoga practice of viewing the world as a dream can help develop an awareness of the buddhi, the witness. The wisdom and clarity of the buddhi enable one to face life’s trials and challenges with grit. Explore practices which cultivate courage.

Cross the River

Cultivation of the buddhi, as well as courage and steadfastness, are needed to cross the river of the world into spiritual awareness. Access to the buddhi brings an awareness that the true self is distinct from the mind and emotions. One main way to develop the buddhi is to practice viewing the world as a dream. Another technique is to observe everything without making comments. Then, close your eyes and view your thoughts/feelings with the same attitude. These techniques free you from the dominance of the senses, mind, heart, emotions and ego. They allow you to more clearly access your true self and recognize the presence of Spirit everywhere.

True grit is also needed on the spiritual path. Yoga practices can help you cultivate courage and steadfastness. Courage is needed to help face life’s difficult situations. Steadfastness allows you to apply effort in a consistent manner. Both grit and the wisdom of the buddhi are necessary. Sri Ramakrishna said that the one thing needful is to cross the river of the world. In life we meet and relate to all kinds of people and have many different experiences. The question is:  Does the river sweep you away or do you cross safely?

  • The yoga practice of seeing the world as a dream helps to develop the buddhi
  • The Bhagavad Gita shows how to go beyond feebleness and face life’s challenges with courage and steadfastness
  • Meditating in the third chakra (the navel energy center) or the third eye can help you establish inner courage
  • Deep meditation brings comfort. Comfort comes from the Latin cum (with) and fortis (instilled with bravery)
  • In the view of yoga, wisdom is the realization of Spirit and the recognition of Spirit everywhere
