RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

The Canvas Technique

Can spiritual attunement lead to ecstasy?

Yogis have found that bliss, joy and love are at the core of our being. Yoga practices allow us to discover and abide in the joy that is the true self. The canvas technique is one way of getting to know the soul. Through it you can begin to sense the true self within and in all people. Getting to know yourself as a soul brings more joy and fulfillment into your life.

Only the Canvas Remains

You are joy and bliss. Dedicated yoga practice opens you to the ecstasy which is your true self. The canvas technique from the Panchadasi is one way to contact the bliss, love and light of the soul. Think of yourself as a canvas on which the world has been painted. All the incredible diversity of the people and events are superimposed on your inner self. This technique involves eliminating all the images until only the canvas remains.

One, you can either think that you are the canvas upon which the beautiful masterpiece of the world has been superimposed. Or you can consider that you are the painting and cut away the shapes, forms and colors until all that remains is the canvas. The goal is to eliminate all the names and forms until just the canvas remains. This practice allows you to sense your soul — the true self in back of all people, things, activities and events.

  • Joy, bliss, love and consciousness constitute the true nature of the soul
  • We allow our minds and hearts to experience bits of the soul’s joy as a result of contact with external objects and delightful personal events
  • One goal of yoga is to become so attuned that we feel ecstasy as a natural part of our existence
  • The canvas technique from the Panchadasi is one way of getting to know the soul
  • Life becomes more fulfilling through finding the source of joy

How to Succeed

As you may know, we do not charge for our courses. All Yoga World content is free and available to you with our blessings. However, we do have a simple, but important request that’s key to the transformations necessary to succeed on the path.

We ask you to commit two hours a week to selfless service. This service can be anything you choose ranging from helping a family member or neighbor to volunteering at a nonprofit organization.

I Commit to Serve
