RAMAKRISHNA ANANDA

Which Kind of Samadhi is Most Natural for You?

How the content of your mind reveals your nature

Samadhi is often defined as the thing itself, the reality and essence of everyone and everything. You are experiencing samadhi when you focus so intently on the object of meditation that you become aware of its essence. You lose awareness of the passage of time and of the room and body you occupy. You may also awaken to the peace, joy, love or light of your true self.

Explore the progressive levels of bhavas (moods of love) as well as the different types of samadhis to find the samadhi most natural for you. The ego cannot cause samadhi — but it does need to get out of the way. Always remember that samadhi is a gift from Spirit, not a personal achievement.

Who We Are and What Is What

To experience samadhi one needs to still the body and prana so that one’s awareness can flow to Spirit. The project of meditation is to give our awareness to more and more subtle objects until we dwell in the soul, the Spirit within.

Samadhi, the awareness of the thing itself, starts at a gross sense level and moves progressively to very subtle objects until finally we have awareness of soul — who we are and what is what.

  • Notice the content of your mind (most thoughts are generated by your feelings)
  • The content of your mind provides clues about your most natural gateway to samadhi
  • Sacrifice is involved in samadhi — one sacrifices present thoughts/feelings for something higher
  • The bhakta (lover of God) surrenders to a series of deepening moods of love called bhavas
  • Often the rapture of oneness with the Divine found in bhavas develops into samadhi
  • Samadhis start with absorption of awareness in physical objects and move progressively to very subtle mental objects until finally we gain awareness of our true self, the soul
